| 1 | EXPERIMENT: Melting moments The floating ice cubes displace (push aside) their own weight in water. In fact, they are made of water themselves, but with lots of tiny air bubles trapped with it. It is these that make ice cubes float. When the cubes melt, the air escapes, and the water left weighs exactly as much as the water it had displaced.
